Culture suppresion in the Balkans?
Following on the heel of the Greek government’s decision to shut down it’s culture portal and all of the children’s libraries last month, the Albanian parliament voted to disband the country’s Academy of Sciences this week, according to blogger N. Ago, by the simple expedient of cutting it’s funding (linked sources in greek and albanian).
It’ ll be interesting to see how this unfolds, but I doubt there’ll be any real backlash from european cultural associations and intellectuals, seeing as details are scarce and the story appears to have garnered zero coverage as yet in the english speaking press.
