Publish or perish
There, bloody finished and on time! 4am, final proof corrections sent on their way; can I at last get printed and be done with, now?
Nothing exciting, like a novel or my memoirs, really; just a buzzword-heavy first-name article to be included in a blocky encyclopedia that’ll be published Stateside (pre-publication NDA notwithstanding, I’d spill more beans about it). A year’s worth of academic mucking about the web and scraping various books and journals, based on five years of R&D, with frustrating corrections flitting to and fro at a snail’s pace, condensed in 10 pages of tight print, and do I even get a free copy for my troubles? Not bloody likely; merely a discount voucher for “my library” (which, I recently found out, fits snugly in less than 10 small cardboard boxes). At the moment, the lengths to which some people will go to get published amazes and amuses me no end. Still, it’d be good to see the friggin’ thing finally in print, if only to put it behind me and start doing some real work for a change…
