Holland Open Software Conference που
διεξάγεται αυτές τις μέρες στο Amsterdam.
Ο
Jesús Villasante
κατηγόρησε (
video stream) τις μεγάλες
εταιρείες λογισμικού όπως η IBM, η HP και η Sun ότι χρησιμοποιούν την κοινότητα
ΕΛ/ΛΑΚ ως υπεργολάβο, λειτουργώντας έτσι σαν ανασταλτικός παράγοντας για την
πρόοδό της, σε συνδυασμό με τις πιέσεις από τα λόμπι των πνευματικών
δικαιωμάτων και τον κατακερματισμό των προσπαθειών της ίδιας της κοινότητας,
ενώ επεσήμανε ότι η Ευρώπη κινείται με αργούς ρυθμούς στην ανάπτυξη λογισμικού
σε σχέση με την Αμερική και την Ασία.
Open-source communities need to take themselves seriously and realize they
have made a contribution to themselves and society. From the moment they
realize they are part of the evolution of society and try to influence it, we
will be moving in the right direction[..]Open source is a complete mess–many people do lots of different things.
There’s total confusion today[..]What I think is that Europe doesn’t have a software industry today–the
only one we have today is in America. In the future we may have China or
India. We should decide if we will have a European software industry in the
future.

The money [..] flows mainly to hardware giants, such as H-P, Sun, and IBM.
It flows from their customers, and it usually flows then to products and
services of the hardware vendors’ choosing.There is nothing necessarily wrong with that. But many, many open source
projects are begging for support, for time and money, for users – well,
mostly for money.[..]So my response to Villasante is very simple. Sir, put your money where
your mouth is. Find more money for open source projects. Don’t just use us to
make political points. Get us good jobs with good wages.

While it seems to me that these points are certainly true and
indeed, Europe is in danger of missing far more than “just” an opportunity, Mr.
Villasante was vague on actually how he thinks the EU commission (for example)
hopes to change that and “activate Europe”
