Η παγκοσμιοποίηση και η φίμωση του τύπου
Αμερικανικές αρχές, μετά από αίτηση Ιταλικών και Ελβετικών αρχών, κατά πάσα πιθανότητα, ανάγκασαν αμερικανική εταιρία διαδικτυακής φιλοξενίας που εδρεύει στο Λονδίνο να τους παραδώσει τους servers του ανεξάρτητου δημοσιογραφικού οργανισμού Indymedia. Μπάχαλο χωρίς προηγούμενο..
Οι servers που φιλοξενούσαν συνολικά 20 ειδησεογραφικούς τόπους, που εξυπηρετούσαν 17 χώρες, ενώ η κατάσχεση έγινε βάσει της νεότευκτης συνθήκης MLAT (Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty), που καθορίζει την διακρατική συνεργασία των ΗΠΑ με τρίτες χώρες σε θέματα διεθνούς τρομοκρατίας, απαγωγών και ξεπλύματος χρημάτων. Κανείς δεν ξέρει ακόμα ποιές υπηρεσίες συγκεκριμένα συνεργάστηκαν στην κατάσχεση, ή τι απέγιναν οι servers.
Στη συντριπτική τους πλειοψηφία, τα διεθνή ειδησεογραφικά πρακτορεία μέχρι στιγμής ποιούν την νήσσα απέναντι στο θέμα, κάτι που δεν θα έπρεπε να εκπλήσσει κανέναν: εδώ, στον πόλεμο του Ιράκ αποσιωπούσαν ακόμα και τις δολοφονίες δημοσιογράφων, σιγά μη βοηθήσουν τώρα τους ανεξάρτητους, που τους τρώνε και το ψωμί…
Προς τιμήν τους, την είδηση κάλυψαν το BBC, οι Washington Times, ο Guardian και ο Seattle Post Intelligencer. Ευτυχώς, επίσης, υπήρξαν σφοδρές αντιδράσεις από διεθνείς οργανισμούς:
“We have witnessed an intolerable and intrusive international police operation against a network specialising in independent journalism,” said Aidan White, general secretary of the International Federation of Journalists.
“The way this has been done smacks more of intimidation of legitimate journalistic inquiry than crime-busting.”[..]
“The seizing of computers and the high profile nature of this incident suggests that someone wanted to stifle these independent voices in journalism[..].We need a full investigation into why this action took place, who took part and who authorised it.”
Ακόμα, σύμφωνα με το Electronic Frontier Foundation:
“The constitution does not permit the government unilaterally to cut off the speech of an independent media outlet, especially without providing a reason or even allowing Indymedia the information necessary to contest the seizure”

Update (14/10/04): Τους επέστρεψαν!
According to a post on Indymedia Argentina the two Indymedia servers seized earlier by the FBI are in the process of being returned: “A Rackspace employee stated, “I was just told that the court order is being complied with and your servers in London will be online at 5pm GMT. I will pass along anymore information that becomes available and that I am allowed to.” It has been verified that the returned hard-drives are the originals, but the circumstances of the seizure still remain unclear: who took them, why were they taken, and under which court order? Indymedia is not aware as to whether Rackspace is still under gag order. The hard-drives will be treated as “hacked” (compromised) and as a result there will be delays in restoring the sites that are still down.
