In August ’89, I stepped timidly into the computer terminals room of the Aristotle U. of Thessaloniki Mathematics Department, to get my first glimpse of real computing power. I had just passed my exams that, after three failed attempts at making the hallowed Heraklion Informatics School, landed me in AUTh Math. My dissapoinment and frustration were mitigated by two facts: I’d be studying close to home (a big boon at that time, since economic conditions were not that favorable to allow for jetsetting); and, I’d at least have the chance to major in Computer Science, as it was still possible to do that from Math (not for long, as I later realized).

That day in August, I was escorting my younger brother, already a student of the School since the year before, and owner of a precious student account at the IBM 3270 terminals, running VM/CMS on what I now guess was a System 370.
